Acute cerebellar ataxia.

چکیده
Acute cerebellar ataxia occurring in childhood is a definite clear-cut syndrome, yet only three cases appear to have been reported in the British literature (Batten, 1907; Taylor, 1913), although more recently cases with similar features have been included in wider surveys on encephalitis by Brewis (1954) and on ataxia by Shanks (1950). Typically the clinical picture is characterized by the sudden onset of ataxia in a previously well child. The infant staggers, falls and acquires a drunken, uncertain gait; there is often a gross intention tremor, staccato speech and frequently nystagmus. There are no signs of meningeal irritation, fever is absent and the infant remains alert with no alteration of consciousness. Despite these alarming signs the prognosis is generally favourable and recovery takes place over a period of time ranging from a few days to six months. The object of this paper is to report seven further cases of acute cerebellar ataxia, to discuss those already reported and to draw attention to a syndrome which, if unrecognized, may result in disorders of a more serious nature being diagnosed.

Contribution of Somatic and Dendritic SK Channels in the Firing Rate of Deep Cerebellar Nuclei: Implication in Cerebellar Ataxia
Introduction: Loss of inhibitory output from Purkinje cells leads to hyperexcitability of the Deep Cerebellar Nuclei (DCN), which results in cerebellar ataxia. Also, inhibition of small-conductancecalcium-activated potassium (SK) channel increases firing rate f DCN, which could cause cerebellar ataxia. Therefore, SK channel activators can be effective in reducing the symptoms of this disease, ...

Central nervous system involvement is not uncommonly seen in patients with enteric fever. However, acute cerebellar ataxia as an isolated neurological complication of enteric fever is very rare. We report a patient with blood culture proven enteric fever who developed acute cerebellar syndrome during the first week of illness. Following treatment with appropriate antibiotics, patient showed com...

A 52-year-old man experienced fever, sore throat, and rhinorrhea for several days. Some days after resolution he developed dizziness, paresthesia on the hands, and unsteady gait. Ocular movement was not limited. His gait was ataxic and no limb weakness on Romberg sign was evident. Muscle stretch reflexes were absent. Acute cerebellar ataxia was suspected. Anti-GQ1b antibody, however, was detect...

A 2 year old boy developed acute cerebellar ataxia in association with erythema infectiosum. During the disease, genomic DNA and antibodies against human parvovirus B19 were detected in serum but not in cerebrospinal fluid. Parvovirus B19 associated acute cerebellar ataxia might occur due to transient vascular reaction in the cerebellum during infection.

Acute cerebellar ataxia (ACA) is a relatively common neurological disease in children. Most common types of ACA are acute post-infectious (APCA) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Less common but important causes include opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) and acute cerebellitis. Cerebellar neoplasms and acute hydrocephalus are additional causes of paediatric ataxia. APCA is the m...

Acute childhood ataxia is a common cause of presentation to the pediatric emergency room or child neurologist. The primary concern on initial assessment is to exclude serious causes of this clinical syndrome, including central nervous system infections and mass lesions, while recognizing the essentially benign nature of acute ataxia in most children. Childhood ataxia can be diagnostically appro...
